Is arm pain a sign of heart attack?

Generally, arm pain is chaterized as pain, discomfort, or stiffness that occurs anywhere from your shoulders and penetrates down to your fingers in one or both arms. Most often, it’s caused by an injury or overuse. But there are many other health conditions that can cause your arm to hurt. This pain can either be acute or very severe depending upon the cause of pain.

Pain in either arms signify or informs you about a medical condition. BUT, this is not necessary! Pain in your left arm could be related to a heart condition. Angina, which is caused by decreased blood flow to the heart, can cause pain in the arm shoulder. A heart attack can cause pain in one or both arms. A heart attack happens when the oxygen supply to your heart is completely cut off due to a blockage that prevents blood from flowing into the muscle. If you’re having a heart attack, your arm pain will probably come on suddenly. Moreover, arm pain in the wrist can be a sign of carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition that arises by pressure on the median nerve or compression of the median nerve in the forearm.

Arm pain can be caused by a extensive range of problems. The problems include joint inflammation, injuries, compressed nerves and trauma. A person with arm pain experiences soreness, itching, numbness, or discomfort in the structures of the arm. Arm pain is typically caused by an injury, irritation, or inflammation of the skin, muscles, bones, or joints in the arm. Although everyday activities, including typing, writing, working with tools, playing sports, lifting heavy objects, or exercising can cause arm pain as well.

Symptoms that occur with arm pain include:

  • Redness
  • Tingling
  • Numbness
  • Weakness
  • Stiffness
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Limited range of motion

People with nerve damage or compressed nerves in the arm, wrist, elbow, or hand can treat their pain by avoiding repetitive movements and taking breaks more often. If you are experiencing arm pain caused by overuse or exertion, you can try to alleviate the pain at home. If your arm, shoulder, elbow, or wrist is swollen, apply ice packs (or a pack of frozen vegetables) to the area and use a sling to keep the arm still.

Immidiately persue medical attention if  arm, shoulder or back pain that comes on suddenly, is unusually severe, or is accompanied by pressure, fullness or squeezing in your chest. Seek medical attention if you sense an obvious deformity or protruding bone in your arm or wrist, especially if you have bleeding or other injuries.
