Neck is a complex interlocking structure consisting of joints, bones, muscles, nerves, tendons and ligaments. Its main job is to hold up the weight of our head. Pain in the neck is a common medical condition which can come from a number of diseases and disorders and can involve any of the tissues in the neck.

Common causes of neck pain

Some usual or frequent neck pain causes include the following list;

  • Muscle strain

Ongoing overuse of your neck muscles can trigger neck muscle strain, causing chronic neck pain and stiffness. The pain is often worse when you move and may be associated with muscle spasms, headaches, and restriction of neck movements. Poor neck position during everyday activities particularly computer work also included in neck pain causes.

  • Herniated disc

Disc herniation occurs when the tough outside layer of one of the cervical discs tears and the soft gelatinous center may bulge outwards. Herniated discs can put pressure on nerve roots as they leave the spinal cord, causing pain in the neck as well as numbness, weakness, and pain in the arms.

  • Degenerative disc disease

As you grow older, the soft gelatinous center of the shock-absorbing discs in your spines dries out. The condition causes the discs to become narrowed, and the distance between the vertebrae to decrease.

  • Cervical spondylosis

It is a degenerative condition of the cervical spine which is due to normal ageing and wear and tear on the cervical discs and the vertebrae. It is more common among older people. This neck pain causes accompany by development of bone spurs. Symptoms of this degenerative condition are neck pain and stiffness, numbness, pain or weakness in the arms.

  • Cervical spinal canal stenosis

It causes degenerative changes in the vertebrae which can lead to narrowing of the canal in which your spinal cord lies. The associated neck pain of the condition is usually worse with activity, and may radiate to the arms or legs. Leg or arm weakness can also occur.

  • Whiplash

It happen when your head suddenly moves in one direction and then back again. A common cause is a car accident. This type of neck pain causes can strain your neck muscles and cause ligaments in the neck to stretch or tear.

Other neck pain causes may include stress, disease, worn joints, and sleeping awkwardly.
